Use of Handheld Phones by Truck Drivers Banned – Effective 1/3/2012
A new rule effective January 3, 2012, prohibits truck and bus drivers from using handheld cell phones while operating their vehicles. The action is the latest by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to end distracted driving. Drivers who violate the restriction will face civil penalties of up to $2,750 for each offense and disqualification from operating a commercial motor vehicle for multiple offenses. Also, states will suspend a driver’s commercial driver’s license after two or more serious traffic violations. And bus and truck companies that allow drivers to use handheld phones while driving will face a maximum penalty of $11,000.
Remember, it is the policy of Argos that drivers of commercial motor vehicles are NEVER allowed to use a handheld phone while operating a commercial motor vehicle.
